The location of the sinking of the submarine belonging to the Indonesian Navy (AL), KRI Nanggala-402, in the north sea of Bali is a transitional area. The transition in question is between the shallow Sunda Shelf and the deep Sahul Shelf.

Sudiarta explained that the sea near the Lombok Strait is up to 1.3 kilometers deep. Meanwhile, the sea around Celukan Bawang is about 700 meters deep. Therefore, getting to the east, the sea is getting deeper and into the category of sea trenches.
This academic from the Department of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture, Warmadewa University, explained that the currents in the north sea of Bali are among those that receive global currents, so they are relatively strong and rotating. The strong current is due to global winds to the Makassar Strait.
"The great flow of this world from the Pacific enters the Makassar Strait, continues south to the Lombok Strait. Later it enters the Indian Ocean. Well, as about 10-20 percent of it (the current) takes it to the east, but later it will turn around again. But it will enter. again he (current) to the Lombok Strait, "he said.
TNI Commander Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto said the missing KRI Nanggala-402 was declared drowned. This is evidenced by the discovery of items believed to have originated in KRI Nanggala-402.
"Elements of the Indonesian Navy have found oil spills and debris which are authentic evidence of the sinking phase of the KRI Nanggala," said Hadi at a press conference in Bali, Saturday afternoon.
Previously, the Head of the Indonesian Armed Forces Information Center (Kapuspen) Major General Achmad Riad explained that the search for the KRI Nanggala-402 submarine was focused on the sea north of Bali, which is about 40 km from Celukan Bawang, Gerokgak District, Buleleng Regency, Bali. Various equipments are already around the location.
"So if a line is drawn, the distance from Celukan Bawang is approximately 23 nautical miles or 40 kilometers north of Celukan Bawang," said Achmad Riad during a press conference at Base Ops Lanud I Gusti Ngurah Rai, Badung, Friday (23/41) .
According to him, an oil spill was found at the location. A large magnetic force was also found at the location, so currently monitoring is being carried out in the area by utilizing all available equipment.
