Maputo - At least 12 people were found beheaded after an attack claimed by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) radical group in the city of Palma, Mozambique. Allegations say the dozens of people who were beheaded were foreign nationals.

As reported by Reuters on Friday (9/4/2021), the commander of the local police, Pedro da Silva, told reporters who visited the city of Palma that he could not confirm the nationalities of the 12 people who were beheaded.

However, he believed they were foreign nationals because of their white skin.

"They were tied up and beheaded here," said Da Silva on a local television broadcast, TVM, pointing to the area where the dozen people were buried.

Islamic State-linked rebel groups have stepped up their activities since 2017 in the province of Cabo Delgado, home to the city of Palma. However, it is not clear whether the group has the same goal.

Mozambique authorities say dozens of people were killed in the latest attacks that began March 24, and humanitarian groups believe tens of thousands were left homeless. However, the full scale of the death toll and the number of people displaced is not clear.

Mozambique National Police spokesman Orlando Mudumane said he had watched TVM but could not confirm the truth. Mudumane said the police were still investigating.

Reuters has not been able to independently verify information about the attacks in Palma. Most of the city's telecommunications lines were cut off after the attack. But the Mozambique military says the city of Palma is now safe after the army cleared one last section of the city from rebels.

The TVM footage was filmed outside the Amarula hotel, when a group of people, including foreign nationals and local residents, were surrounded by rebels a few days after the attack. The group attempted to escape in a convoy of cars on March 26 but were ambushed outside the gates.

Mozambique authorities said seven people were killed, with two of the British and South African.

On Thursday (8/4) local time, a number of leaders from South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana held a meeting in the capital Maputo to discuss the response to the rebel attack. Mozambique's Foreign Minister, Veronica Macamo Dlhovo, stated that the leaders were determined to send a mission to Mozambique this month.
