Accidents at a number of mines in China are common, due to a lack of security and regulations.

In January, ten gold miners were confirmed killed in an explosion at a mine in China's Shandong province.

In December, 23 people died after being trapped in a mine in the southwestern city of Chongqing. Three months earlier, 16 people died in separate coal mines in the same area.
